New Hanover County Real Estate

New Hanover County
New Hanover County is the second smallest county in the state of North Carolina. Yet, its county capital, Wilmington, is among the state’s largest cities.
Formed in 1729, the name comes from German nobility. It is named after the House of Hanover. Though the name is German, the rulers in England at that time were Hanovers. Today’s population is around 273,000.
There is something in New Hanover County for everyone. For history lovers, the area is full of history such as being the home of the Battle of Fort Fisher (one and two) and the Battle of Wilmington. These were among the closing battles in the Civil War.
New Hanover County is home to four islands: Pleasure Island, Figure Eight Island, Masonboro Island and Wrightsville Beach.
Pleasure Island is about 20 minutes from downtown Wilmington and is home to Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, Fort Fisher, the Fort Fisher Aquarium, the Southport Ferry and the boat launch and wildlife area of Federal Point.
Figure Eight Island is the home for some of the area’s most affluent residents. It became part of the Poplar Grove Plantation in 1795 and was renamed Foy Island. In World War II, it was utilized by the United States Coast Guard. Dan and Bruce Cameron of Wilmington bought the island and eventually turned it into the secluded paradise it is today.
Masonboro Island is the only island that is still uninhabited. The island is accessible only via watercraft. It is a popular destination for boaters, campers and surfers. Masonboro Island is a designated State Natural Area.
Wrightsville Beach is, perhaps, the best known of the four islands. It is rich in history that will forever link it to Wilmington’s history. Its official beginning was in 1725 and is home to the Carolina Yatch Club which was founded in 1853 and is still active and prominent in the community today. When people think New Hanover County and beaches, the first one most think of is Wrightsville Beach.
The U.S.S. North Carolina Battleship is moored in Wilmington as museum ship and memorial. With a rich history that began when she was the first newly commissioned ship to enter service during World War II, she played an important role in every single major naval battle in the Pacific. During that time, she earned and incredible 15 battle stars. That made her the most decorated ship of World War II. On April 29, 1962, she was dedicated and now makes her home directly across the Cape Fear River from the Historic Downtown Wilmington area. For more information on the battleship, click here.
