Landfall
The most exclusive neighborhood in Wilmington, Landfall, may also have one of the most storied histories. Today, it is THE gated community with 23 plus separate divisions, over 1,500 homeowners all on 2,200 acres of prime property.
Oh, and it has 45 holes of golf designed by none other than Jack Nicklaus and Tom Fazio. There are two separate clubhouses. It also has a tennis complex designed by Cliff Drysdale with 11 tennis courts.
About that history? Perhaps you have heard of Airlie Gardens? Airlie was created by Pembroke L. Jones and his wife Sarah, daughter of Colonel Wharton Green. Though most of their grand entertaining was done at the estate in Airlie, Jones also had a hunting estate, Pembroke Park, on what is now Landfall.
After many starts and stops to create what is now Landfall, Jones’ granddaughter, Jane Pope Akers sold the land to J. P. Goforth of Chapel Hill. When he fell on hard times, he sold the land to Frank H. Kenan in 1989. And the rest, as they say, is history.
This exclusive gated community does, indeed, have 23 separate neighborhoods and they contain homes that value in cost from $250,000 up to more than four million. The neighborhoods are designed around the golf courses and, of course, the water ways which face Wrightsville Beach, the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean.
When One Tree Hill filmed in Wilmington, many of its cast members lived in Landfall. Others have used some of the residences for exterior and interior filming. In a seperate claim to fame, the original designer of the community was none other than Jones’ son-in-law, famed architect John Russell Pope, the designer of the Jefferson Memorial and the National Gallery of Art.
While exceptional entertaining and dining are available at the very exclusive and member owned Landfall Country Club, resident do need to venture out on occasion for shopping, dining, entertainment and, of course, work.
